What is Sexuality Counseling?

I am very excited to now offer Sexuality Counseling/Coaching at Pelvic Wellness! This is a virtual service for anyone experiencing concerns with their sexuality or sexual health. It may come as a surprise that sexual dysfunction is very common. Research shows around 40% of women and around 31% of men. Yet, as you may expect many people do not report these concerns to their providers, so these numbers may not be entirely accurate.  People may seek out this service for the following reasons:

  • Pain with sexual activities

  • Vaginismus

  • Erectile and/or ejaculatory dysfunction

  • Low libido or desire

  • Coping and managing sexuality in relation to chronic health issues (Cancer, Endometriosis, etc)

  • Difficulty having orgasms

  • Desire discrepancies between partners

  • Peri-menopausal and post-menopausal health issues

  • Sexual Health during and following pregnancy

Many people ask, “What is sexuality counseling? Is it the same as sex therapy?”

To be clear, sexuality counseling is not the same as sex therapy. According to the American Association for Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists, Sexuality Counselors represent a variety of professions, ranging from medicine to the clergy. Examples of sexuality counselors are physicians, Planned Parenthood counselors, nurses and other health professionals, school counselors, and clinical pastoral care and counseling providers.

Counselors assist the client to realistically resolve concerns through the introduction of problem solving techniques of communication as well as providing accurate information and relevant suggestions of specific exercises and techniques in sexual expression. Sexuality counseling is generally short-term and client-centered, focusing on the immediate concern or problem. I do not provide long term psychotherapy or mental health services. If I believe that type of intervention is warranted a referral will be made to the appropriate provider.

I offer a holistic approach to addressing concerns with sexual health. With my experience as a pelvic floor physical therapist combined with my training in sexuality counseling from the University of Michigan, I aim to help you achieve the sex life you want and deserve.

The great part of this service is it is 100% virtual,  so you can work with me from anywhere. This means you can include your partner(s) if you so chose. And of course I always love to see everyone’s fur babies during sessions.

I understand that talking about sex can be awkward, but my goal is to make it as stress free and fun as possible. As I often say, “There is no such thing as TMI, in my line of work.”
