Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a physician referral to see a physical therapist?

No. In California you can see a physical therapist without a physicians referral. However, we will need a healthcare provider to sign off on your plan of care.

What should I expect at the first appointment?

Your provider will spend a good portion of the appointment asking you questions and hearing more about your medical history, current symptoms, goals for physical therapy and anything else that you want them to know (preferably about your health history, but we never say no to seeing a picture of a pet or hearing a fun fact).

Based on that information, your provider will perform a physical examination. This may include assessing how your hips and back move along with your core strength.

Your provider may perform an external musculoskeletal examination. They may palpate and assess the muscles and fascia of the following: the abdomen, the back, the buttocks and the anterior, posterior, medial and lateral thighs.

In order to assess the pelvic floor muscles, an internal examination per the vagina and/or rectum is encouraged. This allows the provider to assess the tone of the pelvic floor muscles, as well as their strength, endurance, coordination and range of motion.

After the examination your provider will review their findings and provide you with an individualized treatment plan.

Your provider will always obtain consent prior to any part of the examination, including the internal examination.

If you have questions or concerns, please e-mail or call us.

How long is the appointment?

The initial appointment is one hour. Follow-up appointments are usually an hour, but more or less time may be warranted based on the recommendation of your physical therapist. We also offer 90 minute initial examinations.

How much is an in-person physical therapy appointment?

The initial hour long initial examination is $240. A ninety minute initial examination is $300. All hour-long follow-up appointments are $220. Payment is collected at the time of service (cash, credit card, check, flexible savings accounts and health savings accounts). Learn more about our rates and scheduling.

Do you take insurance?

Currently, we are not contracted with any insurance companies. We will provide you with a super-bill that you can submit to your insurance company for out of network benefits. It is your responsibility to contact your insurance provider to determine what your out-of-network coverage is.

How much are telehealth appointments?

Telehealth appointments are $100 for 30 minutes and $200 for 60 minutes. Please note that a super-bill will not be provided for telehealth.

Do you treat men?

Yes! We treat anyone with a pelvis.

What is your cancellation policy?

We have a 48 hour cancellation policy. If you do not cancel your appointment prior to the 48 hour window you will be charged the full amount for your appointment.

I just had a baby. How soon can I come see you?

You can schedule an appointment after your provider clears you for internal treatment/penetrative intercourse. This typically happens at an appointment with your clinician six weeks after the delivery.

I have an appointment scheduled, but I have my period. Can I still come in?

Yes, you can still come to your appointment when you are menstruating. There is no contraindication for internal pelvic floor therapy while you are on your period. If you would rather not have internal work performed, that is absolutely fine. Just let your physical therapist know. We can keep the appointment and only work externally or you can reschedule. However, please remember that we have a 48-hour cancellation policy.

Please contact your physical therapist if you have questions or concerns.

What is sexuality counseling? Is it the same as sex therapy?

Sexuality Counselors represent a variety of professions, ranging from medicine to the clergy. Examples of sexuality counselors are physicians, Planned Parenthood counselors, nurses and other health professionals, school counselors, and clinical pastoral care and counseling providers. Counselors assist the client in realistically resolving concerns through the introduction of problem-solving techniques of communication as well as providing accurate information and relevant suggestions of specific exercises and techniques in sexual expression. Sexuality counseling is generally short-term and client-centered, focusing on the immediate concern or problem. We do not provide long-term psychotherapy or mental health services. If we believe this is warranted a referral will be made to the appropriate provider.
